Good evening everyone. My name is Nobutaka Shinohara. I really appreciate it that Mr. Kimura make this P5 program real, and also this is a historical moment for Sport & Health Science part, and probably this moment will be very vivid in our memory in the future. And I am very happy indeed today in having such smart members on this program.

Today's topic is "About Us at the Turning Point." Let me say just a few words about the format that I am thinking of following today.

In the first place I should like to talk about my history, especially from the university life. Secondary, I would like to talk about my current situation, what I do now. Thirdly, I will talk about my future, what I want to do in the future. So the story begins.

After I entered Ritsumeikan University, I had nothing what I want to do. I spent the precious time doing nothing. When I was in the first grade, I took my first TOEIC-IP test. The score was 645, and I asked Mr. Ota what score he got, because I was in the same English class with him. As a matter of fact, it is my understanding that he got over 700. This was the defining moment that I decided to study English.

Since I entered Ritsumeikan University I had taken TOEIC-IP and official TOEIC tests 6 times by the end of sophomore because of the fact that taking TOEIC-IP test is the duty for us as Sport & Health science part students. I have improved my English ability gradually, and at the end of December , when I was in the second grade, I got the score which satisfied myself.

Until the time when I took last TOEIC-IP test, my main focus was on how to learn English, but after that there was a big difference. My main focus was transmitted from 'how to learn English' to 'how to use English.' From the standpoint of using my English ability, I have to expose myself to the situation that I have to use English. So it is spring vacation I went to study abroad to improve my English ability. After coming back to Japan, I still managed to use English. I met the officials of foreign-affiliated company and also the United Nations, whom Mr. Kimura introduced to me.

And I talked with them about a very variety of topics in English. Every time I met them, I strongly felt that my English ability was so poor, but at the same time I also felt that English gave me a lot of precious opportunities which I never experienced if I had not studied English.

One of the most unforgettable words which were given by officials of foreign-affiliated company were that without English you cannot succeed, but if you have a good command of English you have a ticket for the global world. I think it is true that we are living in a very rapidly shrinking globe.

And from these past experiences, I learned that English is necessary, but English is not enough to succeed. So, I need to get other skills or specialty. Currently I especially focus on studying sports science, which is my major, and Chinese and athletic training, and use English as a tool.

I have a lot in my mind, what I want to do in the future, and I have been developing many ideas about it. My desire is that I want to work at the place related to sports in foreign country, but I am still searching for my definition.

Maybe time is running, so I should like to bring this talk to the end with three calls for the action from my experience.

First, by the end of sophomore, you have to get basic English ability. I recommend you that you get at least TOEIC 900. The reason why I recommend TOEIC is that it is easy for you to improve your score and if you get a good TOEIC score, it gives you big advantage when you want to work in Japan. When you are in the third grade, you have to learn a lot of things as contrasted with first grade and second grade. So you cannot use a lot of time only in studying English. So you have to get basic English ability by the end of sophomore.

Second, you have to be on the stage how to use English not on the stage how to learn English when you are in the third grade. You have to find the way to use your English.

And finally, you need to get other skills or specialty. Whatever it is, you need to learn other things along with English.

These are what I want to tell you today. Hopefully my talk gave you some inspirations. Thank you.
